Since 1952, Precision Twist has applied, experience, knowledge and craftsmanship to its high speed steel and solid carbide drill lines. Today, Precision Twist is recognized as a leading supplier of quality cutting tools in the industry. Small Parts carries an extensive line of Precision Twist Products. High speed steel (HSS) can withstand higher temperatures without losing its temper (hardness). This property allows HSS to cut faster than high carbon steel, hence the name high speed steel. At room temperature HSS and high carbon steel have an equivalent hardness; only at elevated temperatures does HSS become advantageous. Surface Feet Per Minute (SFM) Ratings as follows: Steels < 350 BHN (Brinnel Hardness Number) = 45 SFM, Cast Iron < 320 BHN = 55 SFM, Titanium < 270 BHN = 50 SFM, Nickel < 150 BHN = 50 SFM. The Split-Point, or Crankshaft Point, has gained widespread use and is applied to both 118 and 135 Degree included point angles. Its main advantages are the ability to reduce thrust and eliminate walking at the drill piont. This is a distinct advantage when the drill is used in a portable drill or in drilling applications where bushings cannot be used. The split-point also has two positive rake cutting edges extending to the center of the drill, which can assist as a chipbreaker to produce small chips which can readily be ejected.
