About AMS 59032 Pocket Penetrometer, Soil Strength

The AMS pocket penetrometer provides rapid estimates of unconfined compressive strength of cohesive soils. Although pocket or hand penetrometers are used widely for checking consistency and providing rapid estimates of compressive strengths in the field, they should not be used to replace laboratory testing or extensive field analysis. In addition, hand penetrometers can be used to accurately indicate consistency and approximate unconfined compressive strengths of undisturbed cohesive soil core samples. The 1/4" diameter loading piston is pushed into the soil surface until the engraved mark is level with the soil. Compressive load is indicated by reading a scale on the piston barrel where a friction ring indicates maximum reading. Scale units are measured in tons/sq. ft. (kg/sq. cm). Pocket penetrometers are required by OSHA on all excavation jobs, and they can help protect you from costly lawsuits and construction delays. A special AMS 1" Pocket Penetrometer Adapter Foot is available as an option for use in low-strength cohesive soils.
