Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., known to the public as Teddy, became the twenty-sixth president of the United States (1901-1909), the youngest man to ever to become president when he succeeded the assassinated William McKinley in 1901 at the age of 42. Roosevelt extended the power both of the presidency and of the federal government to protect the public interest in battles between business and labor. He steered the United States actively into world politics quoting a favorite proverb, "Speak softly and carry a big stick". A statesman, historian, conservationist, explorer, author, and soldier, he is famous for his personality, his energy, his vast range of interests and achievements, his model of masculinity and his "cowboy" persona. Roosevelt was adored by the majority of Americans. Teddy bears are named after him.
