About Colombianite Piedra De Rayo “Stone Of
Colombianite is also known as Piedra de Rayo, an ancient form of Obsidian glass formed from volcanic activity. It closely resembles Tektites, hence its Pseudo-Tektite classification, & it’s estimated to be around 30 million years old. Piedra de Rayo translates to “Stone of Lightning" & is believed to have been the “Cintamani Stone” from Sanskrit teachings & literature. Most Colombianite forms in small ovals & spheres with pitting & uneven grooves along the outside that are remarkably like actual Tektites. Irregular shapes have also been found, but they are much less common. Colombianite has a hardness of 5.5 – 6. You may think that it’s a solid, bold opaque stone that is unable to be penetrated by light, however, shining a light through Colombianite will result in the dark exterior being overwhelmed by a white (sometimes smoky) transparent color that shines through. Colombianite is a rare sacred stone & today local villagers and tribespeople make a living by hand mining these pieces. There are only a few known deposits in regions of Colombia.
