About First Alert 90866 LCDI Safety Extension

From the Manufacturer Electrical fires kill over 750 people and cause over $1 billion in property damage annually. Extension cords have been identified by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission as a leading cause of electrical firs in the home. Every six minutes there is an extension cord-related electrical fire in the US.The Fire Shield Safety Extension Cord is the world's only power cord which can shut off power when a dangerous electrical condition or potential fire hazard is detected. Built-in electrical circuitry continuously monitors the condition of the cord and shuts off power in just 25/1000's of a second if there is any damage or war that can lead to combustion, before the fire can occur. Cord-related electrical fires typically result from damage to the cord itself. Often invisible to the naked eye, this damage may result from running cords beneath carpets or furniture, crimping or pinching of the cord, overloading damage from pets, or simply from everyday use. Once damage has occurred it is irreversible and the cord will continue to deteriorate.Fire Shield cords have specially shielded conductors. If any damage or degradation occurs, an electrical signal is conducted back to a tripping device in the plug. This device then shuts off power to the cord, eliminating the possibility of a cord fire.
