INSTALLATION: One of the best features of our niches is the simplicity of their installation. Because our niches do not require spacial pre-framing they can be installed after tiling has begun and exact tile layout has been determined which is almost always impossible in framing stage of the shower. Installer just has to make sure that there are no pipes or wires in the general area where niche will go. After exact location of a niche is determined, installer will press the niche against the wall and outline the cut out size required. Next, by using a grinder installer will cut the tile underlayment out in the required area. After the opening is cut out for the niche, thinset can be applied to the back of the niche with a 1/4 inch square trowel. Liquid nails (PL 3x can also be used if available). Niche should be firmly pressed into the opening. It should be flush with the outside of tile underlayment. If it is a little proud the extra can be cut off with a utility knife or oscillating tool. Next the joint between the wall tile underlayment and niche should be covered with fiberglass tape, filled with thinset and waterproofed with same waterproofing that was used in the shower. Kirdi band, Hydroban, Mapei HPG, Red Guard, ARC waterproofing, and many other methods that installer is comfortable with can be used to waterproof this joint only. The rest of the niche is completely watertight and does not require any more waterproofing. Happy Tiling!!!
