David Schlegel's non-objectivel, abstract images can be viewed as visual manifestations of instrumental music; audible tones, rhythms and tempos rendered as visual compositions of color, shape and line, evocative not just of the ethereal aspect of music, but also of the material aspect of being, the artworks manifesting a material presence which can, as does Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition", evoke "a sense of place", wherein the viewer is transported by visual imagery as the listener is transported by music.
