Merengue -- the infectiously hot dance music from the Dominican Republic -- has recently taken Latino nightclubs by storm. But, while young merengueros such as Juan Luis Guerra have become superstars, earlier and folk forms of the music are still unfamiliar to most fans. On this album you'll hear spicy jazz-tinged big-band merengue from the 1950s, stately salon merengue from the early twentieth century, and rare field recordings of rural merengue. As the "national dance" of the Dominican Republic, merengue has a long and fascinating past, intimately linked to Dominican politics and culture. Compiled and annotated by ethnomusicologist Paul Austerlitz, (a complement to his book, Merengue: Dominican Music and Dominican Identity -- Philadelphia: Temple University Press, 1996), these richly diverse merengue styles document the history and genius of Dominican creativity.
