About Dna Classroom Lab Activity, Create Dna Wearable

Product Details Beginning - Easy to perform; requires little or no prior knowledge. Students extract DNA by lysing their cheek cell sample, then watch as wispy white strands of their own DNA precipitate out of a solution containing ethanol. After transferring their DNA to plastic microcentrifuge tubes, students fashion the tubes into DNA pendant necklaces using colorful string. This is one easy lab activity that really gets your students talking about DNA and science! Kit is for a classroom of 32 students. Product Features * An engaging DNA extraction lab * Students learn how to isolate human genomic DNA by creating a DNA necklace they can wear * Includes enough materials for 32 students Time Requirement Teacher prep. Approximately 1 to 2 lab periods to complete. Digital Resources Includes 1-year access to digital resources that include a teachers manual, student guide, fill-in answer sheets, editable assessment questions, whiteboard resources, and more. Performance Expectation(s) HS-LS1-1 MS-LS1-1 Crosscutting Concepts Structure and Function Disciplinary Core Ideas LS1.A: Structure and Function Science and Engineering Practices Developing and Using Models Learning Objectives * Use evidence to construct an explanation that all cells contain DNA. * Conduct an investigation and use models to illustrate biological processes and concepts related to DNA packaging. * Understand that science is a process, and that scientific procedures must be implemented in a stepwise and logical sequence in order to extract and visualize DNA from their own cheek cells. Prerequisite Knowledge and Skills Students should have basic knowledge of cell structure and the role of the nucleus.
