About The Real Ayrton Senna: A Personal Memoir

Ayrton Senna was one of the greatest race car drivers of all time, adored by his fans, feared by his rivals – and generally misreported by the media. THE REAL AYRTON SENNA shares a rare insight into the character of a charismatic, complex and elusive man: single-minded to the point of ruthlessness in an F1car, surprisingly open and warm-hearted away from the circuit. The real man behind the breathtaking skill and flamboyant race moves was little known to the public, and indeed little known to anyone in the racing world outside the teams he drove for. He was in many ways an enigma, who felt no desire to promote or reveal himself. His tragic early death only added to the mystery of his true character. THE REAL AYRTON SENNA is the only film ever made about him by a director he invited to collaborate with him. “I was astonished to get a phone message from Ayrton,” writes Francis Megahy. “I'd made many racing documentaries, but this call turned out to be the opportunity of a lifetime: an invitation from the World Champion to come to Brazil and collaborate on a film about his life. I was particularly excited by the chance to set the record straight and show the man I knew: a far different character from many inaccurate portraits of him by people who hardly knew him, or never met him.” * THE REAL AYRTON SENNA exposes many unexpected sides of the great driver's character: his love of nature, his concern for the environment, his concern for the welfare of the workers on his country estate, his humanity and humility. In spite of his celebrity, we see that at a race on his private go-kart track, he's just one of the local drivers! In the documentary, it becomes clear that family was the prime factor in his life, the resource from which sprang his extraordinary professional confidence. Even when he's showing outstanding skill and concentration flying model aircraft, or fooling around with his young nephews, it's a family affair with emotional content. His psychological and intellectual approach to racing was buttressed by an unrelenting physical workout which would do justice to an Olympic gymnast. This tough man, at home in the challenging mechanical environment of his racing life, also had an intense spiritual side, and it's revealed in a particularly touching way, when he reflects on his innermost feelings: most poignantly, about the ever-present danger in his chosen profession. This documentary does reveal The Real Ayrton Senna – as he has never been publicly revealed before. * Francis Megahy is a writer and director. Niki Lauda, Alain Prost, Michael Schumacher, Mika Haakinen and Michael are among the race car drivers whom he worked with.
