JOHN H. REED He signs as the Governor of Maine from 1960 to 1966 Signature: "John H. Reed/Gov. of Maine/1960-1966". 3½x2 card. John Hathaway Reed (1921-2012) was a Republican politician who served as the 67th governor of Maine from 1960 to 1966. Beginning as a potato farmer in Aroostook County, Reed graduated from the University of Maine in 1942. He later served in the US Navy in WWII after graduating from Harvard's Navy Supply Corps School in 1944. In 1959, Reed was elected as Governor of Maine upon the death of Gov. Clinton Clauson, and narrowly won reelection in 1962. A close adviser to President Lyndon B. Johnson, Reed was appointed to the National Transportation Safety Board in 1966. During the Nixon administration he was appointed as US ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives. He was appointed the same position a second time when President Reagan entered office in 1981.
