Park Seed, Bronze Beauty Heirloom Lettuce Features

  • An early heirloom looseleaf lettuce, also known as Bronze Arrowhead, Bronze Beauty is a leafy vegetable. Beloved for generations, the plant sets attractive heads dense with wavy-edged, burnished bronze and green, oak-leaf type leaves that have a delicious, sweet flavor, with baby and medium-sized heads offering the best texture and flavor. Excellent for salads and garnishes.

  • An herbaceous annual, Bronze Beauty lettuce is a member of the chicory (Asteraceae) family. It is a fast-growing, high-producing plant with a compact, uniform habit, perfect for small spaces and containers. The plant is slow to bolt and heat tolerant. Open pollinated, it produces seed that grows true to variety, ideal for seed saving.

  • Versatile and super easy to grow, Bronze Beauty lettuce grows best in full sun to part shade locations with fertile, organically rich, medium moist, well-draining soil having an acidic pH of 6.0 to 6.7. Loose, well-tilled soil and consistent water are important for the best germination. Temperatures above 75°F and dry soil can trigger lettuce to bolt and flower.

  • A cool-season, semi-hardy vegetable, one of the first to be planted in the garden, lettuce seed can be direct sown into the garden as soon as the soil is workable in early spring, about 2 weeks before the last frost date. For fall harvest, sow seeds about 8 weeks before the frost date.

  • Plants can also be started indoors 6 to 8 weeks before transplanting, spring and fall. Lettuce needs cold temperatures to germinate and grow and can withstand light frost and temperatures in the 28° to 32°F range and becomes even sweeter with a light frost. Succession plantings every 2 to 3 weeks is recommended for continual harvest.
