A cool-season crop that grows best in the spring or fall when the temperature is below 68°F. Plant seeds in the spring or fall when temperatures are still cool, as lettuce can bolt in warm temperatures. The perfect temperature is 40 to 60°F. Sow seeds about ¼ inch deep, 1 inch apart in well-tilled, loose, cool soil with good drainage. Add compost or manure to increase drainage. Keep pH at least 6.0. Lettuce will germinate in 7 to 14 days. Keep soil moist but not soggy. Thin plants to 8 to 12 inches apart. Keep the soil moist throughout the growing period. Feed the plants with compost tea every few weeks until harvest. For a continuous crop, sow short rows every two weeks.
