About The Old Farmer's Almanac Poppy Seeds

American Legion Corn Poppies are easy to grow from seed and can be sown outdoors in the early spring or late fall. They prefer rich soil that is slightly moist; but well drained. To increase visibility during sowing, mix 1 part seeds with 5 parts sand. Broadcast the resulting blend over your planting area; and gently rake it in before tamping down to ensure good contact with the soil. Poppies will thrive in full sun; but don’t like high humidity or intense summer heat. Water occasionally. Harvest Corn Poppies when the flowers have just opened. For best results, gently strip foliage that will fall below the vase's water level. Deadhead faded blossoms to encourage additional growth. If blooms are left on, poppies will often self-sow for future seasons.
