SUN: During the growing season, grow your flytrap outside in full sun. Give it 6 or more hours of direct sunlight for vigorous growth.
SOIL: You can grow your own Venus flytrap seeds using a soil mixture of perlite, silica sand, and peat moss. Sow your seeds directly on the surface and do not bury them, and make sure to plant your seeds in a well-ventilated container with a lid.
WATER: During the growing season, you should stand your pots in about 1 cm of water (about ⅓ inch) and avoid watering from the top.
GROWTH: Typically flytraps will be only 1/4 to 1/2 inch tall at the end of their first year. They will reach flowering maturity by their third season.
TEMPERATURE: Your seeds will germinate within four to eight weeks, depending on temperature.
The Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula) native to subtropical wetlands on the East Coast of the United States in North Carolina and South Carolina. It catches its prey with a trapping structure formed by the terminal portion of each of the plant's leaves, which is triggered by tiny hairs on their inner surfaces.
