About Tuning Programmable Engine Management: How To

Product Description Do you want to be able to fit and tune programmable engine management, working from home? You can! This book covers the selection, wiring and tuning of programmable ECUs, all done without access to a dyno and with a totally hands-on approach. From the step-by-step of tuning idle, throttle enrichment and high- and low-loads, to tuning for best fuel economy. Mapping exhaust gas recirculation for better throttle response, to safely retarding ignition timing with increased intake air temps. PID tuning loops explained in easy to understand language, directly measuring the crank reference indicator position, and how Lambda numbers relate to air/fuel ratios - they're all here. And if you’re just starting out in this area, there’s also coverage of the fundamentals of engine management systems. There’s even a cheap and incredibly effective tool that you can build so that you can hear when the engine is detonating – or even close to detonating. This compact book is must-have for anyone tuning programmable ECUs. Review This excellent book runs you through the principals of mapping and different types of engine management systems and contains sample fuel and ignition maps. Don't be fooled by the Motec system on the front cover, this book is great for all aftermarket management systems!  - Race Systems, United Kingdom From the Author Who do you turn to when you want to tune programmable management yourself - and you don't want to pay for dyno time or hire an expert tuner? That was the situation I was in when I fitted programmable engine management to one of my cars. The system came without a start map - I was on my own, tuning from absolute scratch. Making it easier for me is that over the years, working as a technical automotive journalist, I've been lucky enough to sit in on many tuning sessions of top engine management tuners. I've also previously written books on engine management systems and their modification. But when I sat down to map a complete engine management system from scratch, I soon realised that nothing I'd previously written - nor anything else I could lay my hands on - really described the step-by-step of the process. Especially, doing it all on the road without a dyno in sight. This book is the result of what I found out, mixed with the theoretical background you need to have if you're to make the right tuning decisions. It is deliberately a short book (62 pages), concentrating on just what you need to know. It takes you from the blank slate to a car with good driveability in tuning fuel, ignition, turbo boost, EGR, idle speed control and more. This book will also help those who would like to make just some tweaks to a tune performed by someone else - to get rid of that stumble or flat spot that occurs at just a certain combination of revs and load, or improve idle speed characteristics with the air conditioning running. Note: this book is also available in a shorter Kindle version, minus all diagrams and photographs - see "Do-it-yourself tuning of programmable engine management on the road". About the Author Julian Edgar started his working life freelancing for photography magazines. He then worked as a secondary school teacher for eight years, teaching senior humanities, before leaving teaching and becoming a full-time automotive writer. He edited a national Australian automotive print magazine before becoming editor of AutoSpeed, an online car magazine. Along the way he wrote extensively for Silicon Chip, an electronics hobbyist magazine, while contributing articles to technical and automotive publications in Australia, the UK and the US. He has fitted and tuned programmable management, working solely from a home workshop. He has also used plug-in programmable ECUs and interceptors, and has been instrumental in developing electronic car modification products and kits. Julian lives in a hamlet 80 kilometres north of Canberra, Australia. He spends much of the week playi
