BEST PRACTICES: We recommend starting with the pawns before moving up to larger pieces. The smaller blocks will help develop smaller intentional cuts while using the number (8 pawns per side) as repetition support. Don’t forget to give each pawn its own personality via carve or paint! We encourage all new carvers to invest in a carving glove.

FINISHING: Acrylic works great for painting the details and personality on beginning carving projects. Thinning acrylic paint works great for giving colors an old-world appearance, as the water pulls the pigment deeper into the wood. Antiquing finishes are also a fun way to add age to a piece.
