Penguin Pottery Glazes - Raku Series - Emerald Features

  • [Raku vs Traditional Glazes]: Raku glazes create unpredictable, varied finishes, capturing the dynamic interplay of fire and smoke. While standard ceramic glazes are formulated for consistent results and higher firing temperatures, Raku glazes embrace spontaneity. They respond to the flames and smoke of the Raku process, resulting in unique patterns and colors on every piece, whereas traditional ceramic glazes aim for uniformity and predictability.

  • [Firing Process]: Pottery glaze must be fired in a pottery kiln at the correct temperature. Do not fired in a kitchen oven. Unlike typical glazes, Raku glazes are fired at a lower temperature, rapidly heated, and then removed from the kiln while still glowing hot. The piece is then subjected to post-firing reduction, typically in containers with combustible materials, to yield its distinct look.

  • [History of Raku]: Originating in 16th-century Japan, Raku pottery was first produced to serve the Japanese tea ceremony. The word "Raku" means "pleasure" or "enjoyment", and the process was favored by Zen Buddhist masters for its spontaneous results, embodying the Zen ideals of simplicity and directness.

  • You can apply glazes either by (a) dipping your bisqued piece into the glaze or (b) brushing it on. Our glazes are ready to apply with a brush. If you're looking to dip, we recommend applying a dispersing agent like Darvan.

  • [LIFETIME WARRANTY] - All Penguin Pottery products are backed by our Lifetime Warranty. if you have any issues, we will give you a refund or replace your product - no questions asked! See warranty & support section for more information.

About Penguin Pottery Glazes - Raku Series - Emerald

Our glazes made in the USA by expert potters. Sometimes glaze contents will settle. That's normal! Ceramic glazes need to be fully mixed to ensure smooth application. We recommend mixing for at least 1-2 minutes.
