About 1956 Baptist Hymnal

Sims directed music conferences, clinics and schools for the SBC and for many years was music director for the convention's annual meeting, as well as other national events. He was associate director of the department, working with B.B. McKinney, church music department director and widely known hymn writer from 1946 until McKinney's death in 1952, when he assumed McKinney's position. Sims was minister of music at First Baptist Church, Nashville, Tenn., from 1945-47. Prior to moving to Nashville, he was minister of music and associate pastor at Queensborough Baptist church, Shreveport, La. Earlier, he was music director and educator in churches and public schools in Arkansas, Nebraska and Louisiana.Sims earned the bachelor of arts and doctor of music degrees from Hardin-Simmons University, Abilene, Texas, and the bachelor of music degree from Centenary College, Shreveport. He earned the master of arts degree in music and did additional graduate study in music education at George Peabody College for Teachers, now a part of Vanderbilt University, in Nashville. He studied at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth; the University of Nebraska, Lincoln; and Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill.
