About Global Investment Performance Standards

CFA Institute, the global association of investment management professionals, has released the 2020 edition of the Global Investment Performance Standards (GIPS®). The GIPS standards are a set of standardized, industry-wide ethical principles that guide investment managers and asset owners on how to fairly calculate and present their investment results, with the goal of promoting performance transparency and comparability. The latest release marks an important milestone in the evolution of the GIPS standards to ensure their relevance for all investment managers and asset owners. The 2020 GIPS standards expand upon the last comprehensive update in 2010 and incorporate authoritative guidance issued in the interim. The 2020 edition is designed to better accommodate managers of alternative investment strategies and pooled funds, as well as private wealth firms. There are three separate GIPS standards documents:The Global Investment Performance Standards (GIPS®) for Firms – for those asset managers that manage assets for clients and compete for business. The Global Investment Performance Standards (GIPS®) for Asset Owners – for those asset managers that manage assets only for their organization and do not compete for business. The Global Investment Performance Standards (GIPS®) for Verifiers – for those independent third parties that provide verification and performance examination services to firms and asset owners that claim compliance with the GIPS standards.
