The Winchester Psalter (British Library MS Cotton Nero C.IV) possesses one of the most unusual and innovative miniature-cycles from the twelfth century. More than eighty scenes form an elaborate pictorial frontispiece that opens with the Expulsion from Paradise and concludes with external torment of the damned after Last Judgement. This study examines both the iconographic sources for the individual miniatures and the principle that guided the selection of this particular combination of Old and New Testament scenes.
