About Northern Sea Oats Grass Chasmanthium Latifolium In

Chasmanthium Latifolium is a clump-forming, perennial grass that may grow up to 4'. Bearing large, drooping, oat-like bloom spikes from slender, gently curved stems, the blueish green, bamboo-style foliage often turn bright gold, especially in full sun, in the autumn. Prized as an easy-care shade grass, northern sea oats is characterized by its large, delicate seedheads. Shooting up blue-green basal leaves in spring, it can sprint up to 2 feet tall and a vibrant green by May, with pale green seedheads nodding in the breeze. By summer, the seeds will have turned a soft ivory and will brown in by early fall before dropping off. Northern Sea Oats spends most of it's winter a soft brown, but ages to a spent gray by February, which is a good time to cut it back to the basal rosette. It spreads easily and can expand rapidly within a few years, making a solid mat in moist soils. Frequently used to prevent soil erosion along waterways, the seed stalks are lovely in floral arrangements.
