The Nike Air Griffey Max 1 “Varsity Royal/Volt” is a popular colorway of Ken Griffey Jr.’s former signature shoe that was last released in 2009. Brought back in April 2021 for the performance trainer’s 25th anniversary, the “Varsity Royal/Volt” succeeds the February 2021 release of the model’s original “Freshwater” makeup. Griffey, a member of baseball’s Hall of Fame, wore the Air Griffey Max 1 during one of the greatest statistical seasons of his playing career. Here, a wavy Varsity Royal synthetic nubuck mudguard appears between the white leather base and white painted midsole. The same light blue hue can be found on the eyelets. A black leather Swoosh is located on the forefoot. Per the design of the original Air Griffey Max 1, the modern version of the shoe utilizes a neoprene bootie-like construction for a supportive fit. Griffey’s former “24” jersey number appears in Volt on the adjustable ankle strap around the collar. Volt tinting accents the visible Air units in the forefoot and heel of the midsole. A fiery baseball graphic is printed on the outsole for a decidedly ‘90s vibe. Release date: April 16, 2021.
