Saffron is ranked based on its moisture, smell, and color known as Picrocrocin, Safranal, and Crocin. Crocin being the color, the higher it is, the better is the quality. The quality of Saffron threads can be also seen visually by the length of the threads and bright red color. If the threads are curled, with yellow tips and brownish-red it is an indication of low grade aged Saffron. Spanish Saffron is 233, Iran the highest is 250, and Afghanistan on average it is 267.
