Vincent Van Gogh's ominous "The Church at Auvers Sur Oise", painted in 1890, was the year of his death. The painting was in fixed-point perspective and a great insight into the artist's turbulent state of mind in the period shortly before his suicide. Van Gogh's design was deliberately distorted, creating a dramatic dramatization of forms. This fraught view of the church of Auvers already prefigures the unstable and uncertain forms of Expressionism, that Van Gogh would became the major precursor. With exaggerated forms, deep colors, and vivid impasto, the artwork was in a sense of perspective, flattening the composition, and breathing in the surrounding terrain like a lung.
