Portulaca grandiflora is commonly known as Moss Rose. It is a rewarding annual that is easy to grow and maintain. Moss Rose makes a great edging plant for the front of a sunny border or grow it in containers and baskets. This white variety produces bright white blooms that continue all summer long. Start Moss Rose seed indoors 6 – 8 weeks before the expected end of frost season. Press the seed into the soil but do not cover it. Keep seed moist until germination. With a temperature of 70 - 80F, germination normally occurs within 14 days. Space the plants 12 - 15 inches apart. Grow in full sun and in well-drained soil. Moss Rose can withstand heat and drought, but they perform best with an occasional deep watering. Trimming the plants during the summer will tidy their appearance and encourage blooming into fall.
