Amazon.com Navigating across the water has never been easier thanks to Suunto's handy DP-65 matchbox compass. Housed in a weather-resistant matchbox-style case, the DP-65 is durable and compact, with a design that fits easily into a shirt or pants pocket for storage. But once you hit the open water, the combination hand-bearing/base-plate compass is ready to steer you in the right direction. The compass includes such features as a fixed declination adjustment system that's useful in areas with large magnetic variation, a luminous needle that's easy to read in poor lighting conditions, and a clinometer that measures the slope of any surface. Add in a jewel bearing and a highly accurate sighting hole and you have a reliable compass for virtually any outdoor application. The real star of the DP-65, however, is its global needle, which works anywhere on the planet. Previously, most compasses functioned well in only one of five geographic zones. That's because the compasses were balanced differently based on the zone's inclination, i.e., the vertical intensity and direction of the Earth's magnetic field. However, as people began to travel more, it became clear that globe-hoppers needed compasses with a greater geographical range. Suunto responded by developing two-zone systems--which work in either the northern or southern hemisphere--and one-zone systems such as the global DP-65.
