Hive is one of the most portable games around, it has no dice, no cards, no board, it is just those 22 near indestructible tiles. You can sling it in a bag, take it to the beach, play on a small table in a coffee shop. The pocket version plays on the tray table of a plane and is perfect for anyone travelling light. Hive feels like chess but do not let that deter you since it is simpler in nature. While playing you feel the same sort of pressure as in chess that you sometimes do not know the right move to make, or that you do not want to make the wrong move. In chess, in order to checkmate someone it takes a lot of work. In Hive, winning is much simpler. The winning condition for Hive is you have to surround the opponent’s bee with pieces. You can start surrounding the opponent’s bee a few moves into the game, and as such it is less complicated than chess. The base game of Hive is made up of twenty two pieces, eleven black and eleven white, resembling a variety of creatures each with a unique way of moving. Hive Pocket include the Mosquito and Ladybug expansions, for a total of 26 pieces.
