One of the most amazing turnarounds in the audio industry has been the rapid increase in the popularity of vinyl records and the rise of the Vinylphiles. When CDs were introduced to the marketplace they were almost universally hailed as the greatest improvement in audio fidelity and operational ease since the vinyl LP largely replaced 78s. Their small size, durability, lack of surface noise and digital recording made them an instant hit. Vinyl sales dropped from 500,000 in 1978 to an all-time low of 210,000 in 2007. Then something happened. Vinyl sales began to grow at an exponential rate, now estimated at 40 million units in 2017 generating $1 billion in sales.
