Product Description The smallest of Nebraska's ninety-three counties, Sarpy County's history looms large. The area was home to Native Americans--including the Otoe, Omaha and Pawnee tribes. Hundreds of thousands of settlers moved through the area during westward migration, and they had to cross rivers on ferries like the one operated by the county's namesake, Peter Sarpy. The addition of Offutt Air Force Base and the Martin Bomber Plant made the county an important hub during World War II and beyond. Author, historian and museum director Ben Justman offers the rich history of Sarpy County. About the Author Ben Justman is director of the Sarpy County Museum. The museum is dedicated to protecting, promoting and preserving the history of Sarpy County, its communities and their people. Dating back to 1934, the organization served as the "Smithsonian of Sarpy County." Staff and volunteers serve as docents, work with collections, prepare displays, facilitate programs and ensure that the rich history of Sarpy County does not fade away. The museum features several rotating exhibits to augment the permanent displays. The collection includes artifacts, government records, newspapers, historical documents, photographs and a variety of resources, all of which are available to the public. Rather than leave items in an attic, basement or with a family member unsure about what to save, the museum strongly encourages people to share anything that might be historically or culturally significant to Sarpy County.
