Gilbert Kalish has been a member of the Boston Symphony Chamber Players for nearly 30 years, and both works featured on this disk bear his indelible musical imprint. The Hindemith Quartet for clarinet, violin, cello, and piano opens with a piano line in which Kalish sets a distinctive mood of subdued lyricism. The rest of the musicians follow close on Kalish's lead and the performance as a whole is elegant and supple. Like the Hindemith, the Shostakovich Quintet begins in the keyboard, but the similarity ends there. In the Shostakovich's extended opening solo, Kalish stakes a powerful musical claim, one of absolute clarity and intense fire. These are great performances. --Gwendolyn Freed
