He apprenticed under Karl Ludwig Schüle in Freiburg.§ In 1825, he began studying at the Academy of Arts in Munich under Peter von Cornelius. However, Winterhalter was more interested in Joseph Stieler’s style.§ In 1835, he painted the German Grand Duke and Duchess of Baden. This commission led to his international career.§ Winterhalter became the court painter to Louis-Philippe, the King of France.NOTABLE WORKS:Elisabeth of Bavaria, Empress of Austria, The Empress Eugénie Surrounded by her Ladies in Waiting, Portrait of Napoleon III.
