He apprenticed under Karl Ludwig Schüle in Freiburg.§ In 1825, he began studying at the Academy of Arts in Munich under Peter von Cornelius. However, Winterhalter was more interested in Joseph Stieler’s style.§ In 1835, he painted the German Grand Duke and Duchess of Baden.
