In honor of the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower's landing at Plymouth in 1620, a new edition of William Bradford's Of Plymouth Plantation -- a first person narrative account of the pilgrims' adventures, challenges, and triumphs during their early years in America. This edition is derived from the 1890 abridged version published by Effingham, Maynard & Co., which has been further lightly edited to make it more accessible to students and the modern reader. This edition also includes a brief account of the life of William Bradford from that edition. William Bradford (1590 – 1657) originally hailed from Yorkshire in northern England, before moving to Leiden in Holland in order to escape religious persecution by King James I of England for his Puritan separatist beliefs. He emigrated to the Plymouth Colony on the Mayflower in 1620. A signatory to the Mayflower Compact, Bradford served as Governor of the Plymouth Colony intermittently for about 30 years between 1621 and 1657. His journal -- later published under the title Of Plymouth Plantation -- was written over a period of years, covering the period of 1620 to 1646. It is regarded as the most authoritative account of the Pilgrims and the early years of the Plymouth colony, including their early encounters with Samoset, Squanto, and the indigenous peoples of the region. Of Plymouth Plantation is a touchstone original source work of early American history and an essential addition to the library of any student of America.
