Pictures on the coins: portraits of: Eugenio Espejo (a medical pioneer, writer and lawyer of mestizo origin in colonial Ecuador. Although he was a notable scientist and writer, he stands out as a polemicist who inspired the separatist movement in Quito) and Antonio José de Sucre (known as "Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho", was a Venezuelan independence leader who served as the fourth President of Peru and as President of Bolivia. Sucre was one of Simón Bolívar's closest friends, generals and statesmen), and Isidro Ayora (an Ecuadorian political figure. He served as the 22nd President of Ecuador from 1926 to 1931.
