About Alternative Imagination Palo Santo Wood Japa Mala
Each wooden bead on this mala is made from Palo Santo, a tree found in Central and South America that is a relative of Frankincense and Myrrh. The aromatic wood is harvested from naturally fallen trees; this sustainable practice protects living trees and prevents deforestation. Each purchase helps plant a new tree for future generations to enjoy! The guru bead (tasseled bead) is made from Tagua, a nut that comes from the genus of trees, Phytelephas, and is commonly referred to as "vegetable ivory." It is a beautiful, sustainable material that compliments the Palo Santo perfectly. The Japa Mala, or mala, is a string of prayer beads used for spiritual practice called japa. Practitioners repeat a mantra while passing the beads through the thumb and ring finger, never the pointer finger and by not crossing the guru bead (the one with the tassel), but by changing the direction and starting again. The mala is to help guide meditation while repeating the mantra hundreds of times, or more. Many mala have 108 beads, but can have fewer. The goal is 100 recitations, and the extra 8 beads help if the practitioner loses their place. If the mala is smaller, the recitation can be shorter, or the practitioner can change direction and continuing. Bracelet length is approximately 10.83 inches, with some elasticity. Beads are approximately 9mm, but vary slightly in size and shape. Because this is natural wood, please expect some differences in the color, size, and shape of the bead.
