The life of St. Margaret of Castello, OP is a pearl of great price. Physically fragile, including being blind and crippled, her parents abandoned her at a very young age for she was an embarrassment to them. Such fundamental and violent rejection did not bring forth resentment and loathing from Margaret; rather, from her heart poured forth compassion and mercy, and she loved her parents and was constant in her prayers for them. Her life on the streets with others who also suffered hunger, lack of shelter, and exposure to ridicule serves to show how deeply she understood and loved the spurned poor. She was a woman on fire for life, a fire of steadfast love. There are those in contemporary society who desire to extinguish life in its many God-given forms. St. Margaret is witness against all forms of violence to human beings; including at and after conception, prisoners, migrant hungry, victims of sexism and racism, and all who find themselves abused, violated, and hindered from sharing their own wondrous humanity. Like St. Paul in his writings to the Corinthians, St. Margaret was content with her weaknesses, insults, and hardships for the sake of Christ; therein was her strength. Body, mind and soul, St. Margaret gave herself to her God and to her neighbor. This book will inspire and surprise since the harvest of immersing oneself in her life is the discovery of the pearl of great price residing at the core of one’s own weaknesses.
